Obituary for Linda Diane Smith

Linda Diane Smith
Linda Diane Smith (nee Carnegie) passed away with family by her side at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at the age of 69 years.

Linda was born in Hamiota, Manitoba to Don and Thelma Carnegie on January 10, 1950. Linda began her schooling in Birtle before moving to The Pas in 1957 with her family. Following high school graduation in The Pas, Linda furthered her education at Red River Community College where she graduated as a Medical Laboratory Technologist. Her practicum took her to Brandon where she met Lyall Smith, her loving husband for 47 years. Lyall’s career took Linda from Brandon, to Winnipeg, Edmonton, Emerson and back to Brandon. Linda practised her profession at the Emerson Hospital then later at The Brandon Clinic once all the kids were old enough to attend school.

Linda was a mother to Kristin, Justin, Kelly and Kerri. She lovingly devoted her life to raising and teaching her four children. She lived her life as an example to them of how to treat others, serve others and love others.

Linda was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she was a respected teacher for all ages. She had a special place in her heart for children and spent hours preparing lessons and activities devoted to teaching about how much God loves them.

Linda was an avid reader and read much throughout her life. She once mentioned that if someone had a personal sad story to tell, she owed it to them to read their story. Linda had an unmatched ability to sympathize with those who had suffered through life in any way. She truly knew how to love everyone.

Linda’s other interests included watching sports with her husband, especially horse racing, walking in the early morning hours with him, and visiting her children as often as she could. She was an excellent cook and baker. We all remember coming home to delicious smells coming from the kitchen where she would be cooking and baking our favorite things.

Linda loved being a grandmother and, even though many of her 13 grandchildren don’t live close by, she made sure they each knew she loved them dearly. She visited when she could and supported them in all of their endeavours. When needed, she would spend weeks visiting and helping tend children, cooking, cleaning and supporting each of her children’s families.

Linda is survived by her husband Lyall, daughter Kristin (Steve) Arnold of Fountain Valley, CA; son Justin (Melodie) Smith of Salt Lake City, UT; daughter Kelly (Jordan) Pieren of Gilbert, AZ; daughter Kerri (Shawn) Lehman of Alexander, MB. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Matthew, Alexandra, Sydney, Sophie, Sadie, Estelle, Norah, Jude, Marley, Crew, Leo, Emerson, and River. Linda will also be dearly missed by her brothers Bob, Gord, Ernie, Gary, Don, Steve and her sister Lori.

Linda was predeceased by her parents Don & Thelma Carnegie, infant brother Don, sister Beverly, and granddaughter Audrey.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Western Manitoba Cancer Centre and the Assiniboine Palliative Care Unit for their care and to the church family and friends for their kind deeds and thoughtfulness.

The funeral service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 107 Queens Ave. E. Brandon, on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow the service, then interment at the Alexander Cemetery. Donations in memory of Linda may be made to BRHC Foundation - Cancer Services, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB R7A 2B3.
