Obituary for Katherine Pouch

At the impressive age of 95 years, Katherine, known as Kay to most of her friends, passed away on Monday, July 20, 2020 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. She was born the second youngest child of Daniellis and Mariae (nee Michalyk) Woroniak on October 26, 1924 in Lipina, Poland. Her dad died when she was quite young – old enough to remember the funeral but still young enough that she was carried for the funeral procession. War came, and like many young women, she was taken to Germany as slave labour. More fortunate than many, she was treated relatively well compared to the fate of many others. She often said people there were like people everywhere; some are good, some are bad. After the war, she was supposed to be sent to Brooklyn, New York, but somehow they found she had an uncle living in Brandon. It was her father’s brother, Fred Woroniak, so that is how she came to Brandon. She met Grzegorz Pouch in Brandon and they were married. Grzegorz was in the Polish division of the British 8th Army during the war and was sent to Canada after the war. They had one daughter, Irene, named after the song “Good Night Irene”, which was very popular during their courtship. The family would like to thank all the nurses and doctors who took kind care of her in her last days. Prayers will be held at Memories Chapel, 330 – 18th Street North on Thursday, July 23, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church, 327 – 4th Street on Friday, July 24, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Fr. John Okosun as celebrant. Donations in memory of Katherine may be made to St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church, 327 – 4th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 3H1.
