Obituary for Anne Rose
The death of Anne Rose, beloved wife of the late Allan Rose, loving mother to Carol (Stuart) Harvey, Beth (Rob) Robertson-Marshall and David (Elizabeth) Rose, occurred at Fairview Home, Brandon, MB on Friday, May 8, 2020.
Born at Forrest, Manitoba on April 28, 1923, Anne was the third daughter of Catherine “Katie” and George Marshall. Anne moved with her parents and siblings to their farm at Bunclody when she was nine. This farm eventually became known as Anne’s Acres. At Bunclody School, she met her future husband, Allan Rose.
Anne loved singing and sang in all the local festivals. She completed high school at Brandon Collegiate and after writing the Civil Service Exam, moved to Ottawa to work for the Censorship Department for three and a half years. While in Ottawa she was active in the United Church, leader of a C.G.I.T. group and a member of “Tot O’Regans Military Vod-Vil-Eers”, a group that took part in entertaining the troops. As the war wound down, she was accepted at Vancouver General Hospital to begin training as nurse.
She developed rheumatic fever in 1945 and came home to Bunclody to recuperate. Her childhood friend, Allan was home from the services at this time and they were married in April 1946. They began farming at Bunclody and continued there until the year 2000 when they moved to Brandon. Anne loved the farm life and was active in the Bunclody community as a member of Bunclody Willing Workers. She was also involved in the wider community and took part in curling, the United Church choirs in Fairfax and Souris, the Souris Acapellas, charter member of Brandon Urbanacres Toastmistresses and on the board of Souris Hillcrest Museum. One of her most rewarding activities was working on the stone cairn project to install the Roll of Honour in Bunclody Park.
Anne had a huge garden and her specialty was growing roses. She loved family gatherings, picnics on the farm, Christmases, and leading singsongs. She also enjoyed putting up miles of electric fence with Allan and keeping him company in the truck at harvest time. Anne and Allan loved to travel, taking trips across Canada, and the United States and abroad. In the year 2000, Anne and Allan retired to Brandon where they met many new friends and took up shuffleboard and lawn bowling; Anne also joined the choir at Prairie Oasis. Anne loved life, and particularly her days with Allan, her best friend. As a widow, she appreciated her neighbours and friends on 26th Street and later enjoyed two wonderful years at Rotary Villa. She loved her long talks and visits with her sister Jean Young, her dinners together with her good friend Leota Nelson, her activities with special sisters-in-law Shirley and Lois Rose and time together with Marjorie Roney.
Anne was predeceased by her beloved husband Allan, parents George and Catherine Marshall, sister Eleanor and brother-in-law Clarence Sands, brother Don and sister-in-law Eva Marshall, brother-in-law Harry Young, brother-in-law Bob Rose and sister-in-law Lois Rose, sister-in-law Marguerite Chapman and niece Beverley Basdeo. She is survived by her children Carol (Stuart) Harvey, Beth (Rob) Robertson-Marshall and David (Elizabeth) Rose; grandchildren Graham (Connie) Harvey, Jamie (Patricia) Harvey, Danica Rose (Josh Toth), Sheena (Kyle) Rogers, Christina Rose (Oeloff de Meyer) and great-grandchildren Lucas, Jessica, Nico, Marlow, Maude, Gavin, Scarlett, Oelina, Christoff, and Tulip. Also left to mourn are her sisters Jean Young, Shirley Yacyshen, brother-in-law Tony Yacyshen, sister-in-law Shirley Rose and many nieces and nephews.
