Obituary for Lee Yarema Gretchyn

Lee Yarema Gretchyn
GRETCHYN: On Monday, February 10, 2020, Lee peacefully went on his final journey home. Lee was born in Stanislaw, Ukraine on September 28, 1943, the only child of Wasyl and Stephania. Toward the end of the war, the family travelled east through Europe by covered wagon, sometimes held in internment camps. After an arduous journey, they settled in Winnipeg where Lee took most of his schooling. He went on to work for MPI, CNR, Woolco – he took a few breaks in between when he didn’t feel the need to work! (That’s just who Lee was then.) Woolco eventually transferred Lee to manage the garage in Brandon in the early ‘80s. It was in this capacity that Lee met Margaret when she questioned the capabilities of one of his mechanics. They spent times together, eventually marrying in June of 1984. This was a package deal since Margaret had a son and daughter. Lee was thrilled to assume the other parent role and remained proud of both Dean and Debbie. Lee eventually worked for the City of Brandon for 25+ years and took enormous pride in his work. He was a loyal friend and was always there to speak up for anyone being wronged. His hobbies were shooting, pistol and target; hunting (with no success); golf until recent years (but was badly beaten by Margaret); lunches with his three friends; following politics; and his family. Lee was clear in saying that his illness was fought by doctors, nurses and aides, not by himself; he was simply lucky enough to be in the care of good people. Lee is so much loved and will be forever missed by his immediate family, his six grandchildren: Kendra, Madison, Breanna, Jessica, Owen and Conner, as well as his two special “grandchildren” Taylor and Madison. The Funeral Service was held at Memories Chapel on Friday, February 14, 2020. Rev. Fr. Michael Tkachuk officiated; cantor was Mr. Tony Yuriy. Interment followed at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Donations in memory of Lee may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200 – 17th Street East, Brandon, MB R7A 7M6.
