Obituary for Thomas Clifford Miller

Thomas Clifford Miller
THOMAS CLIFFORD MILLER, beloved husband, father, foster father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away on January 24, 2020. Tom was born August 5, 1943 in Brandon, MB to Eileen (nee Mitchell) and Gordon Miller of Justice, MB. When the family moved to Brandon in 1949, Tom attended schools there and moved on to Brandon University where he enjoyed the drama and debating clubs and excelled in History. In 1967, he moved to Winnipeg to complete his BA and teaching degrees at the University of Manitoba where he met his wife Diane (nee Lukey).

Together they began a grand adventure of teaching in rural MB (Whitemouth & Moosehorn), starting a family with their beautiful daughter Katriana and creating Starhawk Child Care Services in the northern Interlake. This 20-year project assisted/fostered troubled teenagers in overcoming behavioural inequities and returning them to their home communities when possible. Through his unending kindness and patience, Tom endeared himself to hundreds of teens and their families.

By 1996 semi-retirement beckoned and Tom and Diane phased down to fostering 4 teens at a time in the Cartwright area, which continued until 2017 despite his emerging health issues. Tom will be remembered for his quick wit, ready laugh, sparking blue eyes, love of books, history, science fiction, and every living thing. He was larger than life and relished his Scottish ancestry.

Tom was predeceased by his sister Vera (1978), parents Eileen (1992) and Gordon (1996), father-in-law, Mike Lukey (1994) and brother-in-law Laurie Hughes (2012).

Tom is survived by his loving family: wife Diane, daughter Katriana, grandchildren Chance and Jamaykah; and great grandchild Miyah; as well as many foster children, nephews, nieces, in laws and friends.
The celebration of Tom’s life will be held at Memories Chapel 330-18th Street North, Brandon on Monday, February 3, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Doug Craig officiating and urn bearer Randy Beaudry.

Thank you to family and friends across Canada for their prayers, calls and support; to the caring staff at Killarney Tri-Lake Hospital; to Dr. Jacobs and the excellent nurses in the ICU at Brandon Regional Health Centre; and a special thank you to Dr. G. Visser (Brandon Clinic) for his many years of thoughtful care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200 - 17th Street East, Brandon, or to the Cartwright and Area Foundation Inc, at P.O. Box 114, Cartwirght, MB R0K 0L0.
