Obituary for John Michael Drost

John Michael Drost
DROST: John Michael, age 101 years, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at the Minnedosa Personal Care Home with family by his side.

John was born in Brandon, Manitoba on October 24, 1918 and attended David Livingston school. John worked at Brandon Packers as a Meat Cutter in 1942-43. He met his lifelong love, Helen Sternastik and they were married on October 11, 1942.

John and Helen purchased a half section of land near Rapid City, Manitoba where they created a homestead, raised five children and farmed the land for 65 years. John was a jack of all trades kind of man including welder, mechanic, plumber, and builder to name a few. He was also employed by the TransCanada Pipeline as a chart changer for 34 years. He was a hardworking man who enjoyed the outdoors. He took pride in his homestead along with apple and plum trees. John was a storyteller with an amazing memory; we all will miss your stories.

John was predeceased by his wife of 73 years Helen Marie (nee Sternastik); parents Michael and Sophia (nee Bojarski) Drost; brothers Walter, Edward and Charles; sisters Stella, Bernice and Emily; and son-in-law Richard Elder.

John’s memory will be cherished by his children Charles (Myrna), Barb, Irene (Ken), Joyce and Leonard (Tammy); grandchildren Teresa (Steve), Tracy, Trevor (Marnie), Rick (Shelley), Charmain (Heath), Donna (Denny), Coralie (Kallie), James, Jordan (Jennifer), Jason (Tera) and Nicholas (Desirae); great-grandchildren Justin, Ciara, Madison, Reid, Hartley, Brittyn, Perri, Brendan, Rachel, Mason, Jessica, Sydney, Cassidy, Meadow, Michael, Sophia, Weston, Keagan, Lincoln, Brooke, Reid, Kimberly, Tori and Braxton; and many nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be held at Memories Chapel. Interment will follow at Brandon Cemetery.

Donations in memory of John may be made to Prairie Mountain Health – Minnedosa Personal Care Home, Box 960, Minnedosa, MB R0J 1E0.
