Gertrude “Gertie” Marie Caton, age 93 years, passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre with family by her side. Gertie was born on July 27, 1926 in Toutes Aides, Manitoba where she completed schooling to the 6th grade then began working. She worked various jobs in Winnipeg including as a nanny, at Deer Lodge in the kitchen, and as a seamstress sewing caps. She married Andy Boulet on October 4, 1944 and then worked mainly in the food industry on farm crews, at various restaurants in Somerset, Dunrea, Boissevain and Killarney, she also owned the A&G Café in Dunrea. Gertie completed the Dietician Course through SAIT by correspondence and graduated in August 1974 at the age of 48 years! She worked as the Dietary Supervisor at Killarney Hospital, Head Cook at Brandon General Hospital and then Head Cook at Prairies Oasis Senior Centre until her retirement in August 1987. Gertie married Geoff Caton on December 26, 1993. Gertie was a member of the Catholic Women’s League and Order of the Royal Purple, and for several years she greatly enjoyed serving as an Ambassador at her residence Riverheights Terrace. She enjoyed volunteering in pastoral care and baking for her family – pies were her specialty. Gertie also enjoyed travels to Alaska, Arizona, California and numerous destinations throughout the USA. She attended the Queen’s 90th Birthday Tea at Government House in Winnipeg with her daughter Lucille in 2016. And, at the age of 81 years, she modelled in a fashion show in Winnipeg for a Breast Cancer Fundraiser. Gertie will be lovingly remembered by her children Lucille (Denis) Rondeau, Ron (Marianne) Boulet, Dora (Larry) Wark and daughter-in-law Joan (George) Patridge; grandchildren Michelle (Richard) Long, Marc (Debra) Rondeau, Mireille (Gil) Garza, Kassandra (Mike) Richards, Steven (Neva) Wark, Chantal Boulet, Brodie (Christina) Boulet and Bronson Boulet; 13 precious great grandchildren; 4 step children; 2 step grandchildren; sister Yvonne Day, brother Phil (Ruth) Gelinas, sisters-in-law Bea Gelinas, Lorraine (Robert) Riddell and Cecile Raine; many nieces and nephews; and dear friends from Riverheights Terrace. She was predeceased by her parents Arthur and Florida Gelinas, first husband Andy Boulet, son Lennard Boulet, granddaughter Rhonda Boulet, second husband Geoff Caton, 4 brothers, 3 sisters, 8 brothers-in-law and 3 sisters-in-law. The Celebration of Gertie’s Life will take place at Memories Chapel, 330 – 18th Street North, Brandon on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. Honourary Urn Bearer is very special friend Norrine Shobrooke.
