Condolences

Condolence From: William R Morrison
Condolence: I haven't lived in Brandon since 1989, but my wife was born there, and I taught at BU from 1969 to 1989. She reads the obituaries, and yesterday said "do you know this guy?" Talk about a blast from the past. I sure do remember Tom Bryan. He was in one of my early classes, in the fall of 1971. I remember him for several reasons. First he was what they used to call a "mature" student, and there weren't many of them in those days. Second, he was deeply interested in history (which is what I taught). He used to find interesting things in his reading (he was one of the few students who read more than the assigned stuff), and he'd show them to me saying "you'll be interested in this, Professor Morrison," and I was. Most students were pretty casual about their studies, but not Tom. I have never forgotten the day he came up to me and said that he'd registered for a class in Philosophy, and at the first class, the instructor had pointed at a chair and asked "how do we know the chair is there?" Tom said that if that was what philosophy was, he wasn't interested, and he withdrew from the class, a point of view I certainly understood.

So he had a great life, and lived to be 98. Good for you, Tom....good memories.

Condolence From: Joanne Brooking
Condolence: Tom hired me for my first teaching job at Douglas School. I have many fond memories of the fun we had...cross country skiing at Sprucewoods, taking the kids to Camp Wannacumbac at Clear Lake, the field trip to the Winnipeg Zoo. I will never forget his kindness, sense of adventure and sense of humour. I am so glad that I got to visit with him at Riverheights Terrace.

Condolence From: Reg Helwer
Condolence: Sorry to hear of Tom's passing. He always had kind words and was great to visit with. When I was at Riverheights Terrace just before the September election, he shook my hand as I was leaving and said: "Weeell, I'll vote for you this election but I can't vote for you next time" I asked him what he thought I was going to do to cause him to change his vote and he said: "Well, I'm 98". The Premier had a good chuckle when I told him this story. All the best to the family, you must have great memories.
