Obituary for Thomas Owen Bryan

Thomas Owen Bryan
BRYAN: Thomas Owen Bryan 1921 - 2019

Dad died peacefully after a brief illness on December 2, 2019 with his memory, sense of humour and sentimental streak intact. He was 98.

Dad was born in Wales near the town of Wrexham and emigrated to Canada at the age of 9. He lived in Montreal until he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during the war. He remained in the Canadian Forces and lived in many places during his career including Calgary, Ottawa and London, England. His final
posting was to the air base at Rivers where he retired for the first time and became a permanent Westman resident in Brandon.

Dad, at the age of 50, enrolled at Brandon University. This was a daring proposition for someone long out of school and his success and the awards he received in getting a degree and becoming a teacher was something about which he was justifiably proud. He then embarked on a second career as a teacher and
principal at Douglas, MB until he retired. Dad and Mom then enjoyed an active retirement as travellers, snowbirds and very proud grandparents.

After mom's death Dad continued to live on his own but eventually moved to Riverheights Terrace where he immediately embraced the opportunities for social activities and friendly companionship. Very recently he was still winning at bridge. Dad was an avid golfer, sports fan and raconteur. He loved company and rarely
had the energy required to hold a grudge.

Dad was married to our dear mom, Edith, for fifty-nine until her death in 2004. Although he was not one to brood or dwell on the past, he often reminisced fondly about their years together.

He will be missed by his children Carol (Neil), Greg (Anne), Joan (Glen) and Jim (Debbie) and by his grandchildren Patrick, Chris, Jennifer, Holly, Leigh, Jeffrey and Keith and his daughter-in-law Judy. His grandchildren were very special to him and a source of great pride. He was thinking and talking about
them until hours before his death. He will also be missed by his sister Hazel. Until very recently he ended every day with a call to her in Montreal. Recent additions to the family, great grand daughters Emma and Clare helped brighten Dad's last few years. He never tired of hearing about their latest accomplishments, looking at the newest batch of photos or visiting with them over the internet.

We thank the community at Riverheights Terrace for their kind words and their support for Dad in his later years. A big thank you also to Joyce who was a kind and loving friend who helped Dad live independently for so long.

Dad requested that there not be a funeral. His family will get together for a party in his honour at a later date.
