Obituary for Marjorie Constable

Marjorie Constable
Marjorie Louvain (nee Mummery). With her daughter by her side Marj, age 103 years, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at Rideau Park Personal Care Home. Marj was the first of 9 children born to Winnifred and Russell Mummery here in Brandon. She was the most selfless woman; always putting the needs of others before her own and was so supportive of her only two granddaughters, Kristi and Becky. She gave so much of herself to her family and will always be remembered as the matriarch of our family, as well as the whole Mummery clan. Marj and Fred were childhood sweethearts and were married in July of 1940 and were so fortunate to have had 58 years of marriage. They were joined at the hip and no two people had a more wonderful marriage. Their first child, a son Gary, was born in 1942 followed by a daughter Cindy in 1948. It has been said that there is nothing harder on parents than losing a child, and Marj and Fred experienced the loss of their only son Gary in 1968 at the young age of 25 years due to a sudden illness. Marj and Fred showed such profound strength and courage during that awful time in our lives and the two of them were never the same after our devastating loss. Marj had various careers during her lifetime and the first of those was hairdressing. She then worked in her brother’s IGA store, sold Avon and her last career was working at Clements Drug Store and then Medical Centre Pharmacy. Marj was so proud to work at Medical Centre Pharmacy until her retirement in 1981. Marj and Fred taught square dancing for many years, teaching in Brandon, Carberry and Brookdale. Dancing was a huge and beautiful part of their life together. In Marj’s later years she took up needlepoint as a hobby and before macular degeneration forced her to quit, she completed 87 pictures and gave one to any and all who wanted one of her masterpieces. Marj always spread her love through her generosity, her unconditional love, and more than anything, her gifts of time. Marj was predeceased by her beloved husband Alfred “Fred” in 1998 and son Gary in 1968; three sisters Muriel Mummery, Noreen Toffin and Phyllis Watson; and brother Mel. She is survived by daughter Cindy, son-in-law Ray Brownlee, granddaughters Kristi (Kent) Smith and Becky Brownlee and great granddaughter Kenzie Smith. Marj is also survived by brothers Wes of Calgary, Bob of Abbotsford, Russ of Lethbridge and Garn of Oklahoma, and daughter-in-law Marg (Doug) Rungay, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The Celebration of Marj’s Life was held at Memories Chapel on Tuesday, November 26, 2019. Flowers are gratefully declined and donations in memory of Marj may be made to the Society for Manitoba with Disabilities, Rm 140, 340 - 9th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 6C2 or Special Olympics Westman, PO Box 20149, Brandon South, Brandon, MB R7A 6Y8.
