Obituary for John Krywushenko

John Krywushenko
On Saturday, May 6, 2017, John Krywushenko, beloved husband of Eleanor, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. He was born August 1, 1929 in Doroshowka, Sumy, Ukraine. Having been displaced as a young teen from his home in a small town in "Cymska Oblast" Ukraine during WWII, John was forced to forego his education and the life he knew to traverse across Europe with his younger sister Zina, his mother Eudokia and father Juchym. At the end of the war he was a truck driver in Germany when his sister and her new husband immigrated to Canada as part of the second major wave of Ukrainians to arrive in Canada in the 1900's. In February, 1951 he too arrived in Canada through the infamous Pier 21 in Halifax as a landed immigrant and headed onward west with his mother and father to the Prairies. John faced his new life in a new country (actually a new continent) with new hope, curiosity, and a drive to succeed. Like many new immigrants, he was happy to receive survival work and to learn new skills as he worked in the dry-cleaning industry in Winnipeg and Dauphin. In Dauphin John sang in the church choir where he met his future wife, Eleanor Mymko. He barely spoke English and she spoke very little Ukrainian. They obviously figured out how to communicate and were married September 17, 1955. They were captains and architects of their future. John and Eleanor set goals and plans together and worked side by side to achieve them. By 1960, they were off to Russell, Manitoba as entrepreneurs opening their own "Spotless" dry-cleaning business. John was an astute businessman later owning and operating a Link Hardware in Russell (which later became Home Hardware). John approached life as something to be enjoyed, whether in work or play. He golfed, fished and travelled. He liked to have fun and made time for his extended family and friends to visit at his home and the cottage at Silver Beach. The cottage was a venue for many a canasta game. In 1986, John and Eleanor headed to Brandon as part of retirement but first worked for three years operating the Home Hardware in Brandon. In retirement for over 30 years, John directed his energies as an active member of Holy Ghost Ukrainian Orthodox parish. From Mr. Fix-it and handyman to lending a hand in the kitchen, while teasing the ladies that if they stopped all that chattering, they would get more work done, he was devoted to the parish. John was quiet, rarely too talkative, but will be remembered for humming a happy tune. John was a wonderful husband, brother, uncle, friend and role model. There is so much to be learned from his presence in our lives. The lesson taken from John is to enjoy the time we have, the experiences we are offered, and the people we get to share it with. He was predeceased by his parents, and niece Rose Tomaka. John is survived by his wife Eleanor, sister Zina Popow and numerous nieces and nephews. Prayers were held at Memories Chapel on Wednesday, May 10, 2017. The Funeral Rite took place at the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Orthodox Church, on Thursday, May 11, 2017 with The Very Rev. Archpriest Michael Skrumeda presiding. Pallbearers were Lori Popow, Tammy and Bill Mattern, Donna Wiltshire, Jaz and Blu Tomaka. Interment followed at the Riverside Cemetery, Dauphin, on Friday, May 12, 2017 with Fr. Brent Kuzyk presiding. Pallbearers were Fred Todoruk, Jim Todoruk, Rick Beyko, Mark Symchych, Donna Wiltshire and Lori Popow. Donations in memory of John may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 2B3 or charity of choice.
