Obituary for Mary Helen Dyck

Mary Helen Dyck entered eternal rest Sunday, April 16, 2017. Mary was born November 21, 1926 - the second of four children - to Peter and Helen Sokol, of Carman, Manitoba. Always a hard worker, Mary gleaned much life experience growing up on the farm. In later years she would take on such jobs as digging potatoes, cooking for threshing gangs at harvest time, and waitressing. It was, in fact her job at "Bobby's Bar and Grill" in Winnipeg, that she met her co-workers brother - Edd Dyck. On their first date, he gave her a package of gum, and she never looked back. Edd and Mary were married on October 27, 1945. They had four children, and in 1964 moved to Carberry, Manitoba, where they lived the remainder of their lives. Mary was a "stay at home" Mom, for all of our growing up years. Not only was Mom a phenomenal cook, caregiver and home maker, she was extremely efficient at utilizing everything available to her, - nothing was wasted. She grew and tended large gardens, canning and processing the produce for winter. She sewed the majority of the family's clothes, as well as knitting sweaters, socks, toques, scarves and mitts for us. In later years, she would knit and crochet various items for the I.O.D.E. In 1976, Mom took a job with Home Care, loving it so much, that she continued after home care in a private capacity. Mom was a brilliant wordsmith, and even in the past months - could best us in a game of Scrabble. She had a wealth of knowledge, and we often teased her that she'd likely forgotten more than we'd ever learn! Though she could never utilize the adage of "If it goes without saying - let it." She had earned the right to be a "know it all" because in most instances she did "know it all". Mom's tenacity and strong will enabled her to stay on the family farm until she was hospitalized in December 2016, and subsequently decided to go to the Personal Care Facility in Carberry. Right to the end, Mom maintained a positive attitude, a care giving quality, and a dynamite sense of humour. Her passing will leave a huge void in our lives. Mary was predeceased by her parents, brothers Paul and John, numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, and her husband of 62 years - Edd. She will be sadly missed, but never forgotten, by her only sister Violet, her four children; Brian (Winnie), Ken (Harlene), Harley (Darlene), Marlaine (Lloyd), eleven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. At Mom's request a family graveside service was held Thursday, April 20, 2017 at the Carberry Plains Cemetery, where she and Dad will remain together. If desired, donations in memory of Mary may be made to the Carberry Personal Care Home, Box 2000, Carberry, MB R0K 0H0.
