Obituary for Orval George "Orv" Vickers

Orval George "Orv" Vickers
The death of Orval George Vickers occurred peacefully on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the Assiniboine Centre with Gwen and his girls by his side. Orval was born May 1, 1936 in Bredenbury, Saskatchewan. He attended Brandon Collegiate Institute where he met Gwen, the love of his life, whom he married August 3, 1957. Orval worked hard to provide for his family as a 1st class Power Engineer with Manitoba Hydro for 30 years, retiring in 1991. He was a supervisor and a friend to his crew. With a love for sports, Orv was a skilled curler, hockey player with Melville Millionaires and Wheat Kings, an avid golfer and he also enjoyed socializing over a game of bridge, crib, and cards. A talented woodworker, Orval made many signs, clocks and furniture for friends and family. The family enjoyed trips together and have many fond memories of time spent at their cottage at Clear Lake for 38 years. Orv proved himself to be strong, brave and relentless during his 15 year battle with cancer. He believed that cancer hated a positive attitude and we can attest to his display of that. He was known as a humorous man who never complained and always looked out for others. Orval is survived by his wife Gwen (nee Key), daughters Linda Vickers and Brenda (Bruce) Evans; grandchildren Dustin Harland, Nicole (Jacob) Stanton, Stephen and Danielle Evans; and great-grandchildren Jack and Emily Stanton; niece Carolyn (Chris) Judd; nephews Bill (Anita) Key and Lee Vickers; and many cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents George and Florence Vickers, and brother Lyle Vickers. A Memorial Service to Celebrate Orv's Life was held on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at Memories Chapel with The Rev. Jonathan Hoskin of St. George's Anglican Church officiating. Urn bearer was Dustin Harland. A private family interment took place at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. The family wishes to thank all staff at Cancer Care, the Brandon Regional Health Centre, and the Assiniboine Centre Palliative Care for the care and compassion they provided to Orval and the family. Donations in memory of Orval may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation for the Western Manitoba Cancer Care Centre, 150 McTavish Avenue East Brandon, MB R7A 2B3 or to a charity of choice.
