Obituary for Irene Oakley (Wisnoski)

Irene Oakley (Wisnoski)
OAKLEY: Irene Oakley passed away peacefully after a short courageous struggle with cancer on June 21, 2014. Irene was born in Elk Ranch, MB on July 9, 1929 to John and Martha Wisnoski. She received her education at the Elk Ranch School. The family lived on the farm where Irene helped in the garden and prepared preserves. Irene met Jim, fell in love and married on December 28, 1948. They settled in a farmhouse outside Eden, where they raised three girls. Irene worked very hard, there was no job that she didn't help out with like farm chores, baling hay and harvesting. She also continued her gardening and preserving until 1966 when Jim, Irene and the girls moved to Brandon. While living in Brandon, Irene took on several jobs such as: working at the Brandon General Hospital, Sewing Factory, Chicken Delight and the Bay and Zellers. After retiring, Jim and Irene continued their passion for gardening and enjoying many camping trips in their "boler" trailer. They also toured many parts of the United States including their favorite, Hawaii. Irene always had plenty of food available whenever family and friends came to visit. The grandchildren especially loved Grandma's perogies. After the passing of Jim, Irene continued to enjoy travelling with her daughters to places like the Caribbean and many short excursions. On Irene's eightieth birthday, her daughters took her on one of her dream destinations, an Alaskan cruise. Irene would never miss her early morning walks and three o'clock coffee with her friends. In the last couple of years Irene also took up Tai Chi and enjoyed it immensely along with the many friendships she made. Irene was predeceased by her husband Jim, brothers Alex and Frank and a sister, Rose. She leaves to mourn her three daughters; Sharon (Marcel), Brenda (Ken) and Lorraine (Dave). Grandchildren: Judson, Martin, James, Lexi, Brett, Billy, Corey and Kyle as well as her great grandchildren; Sarah, Liam and Bentley. She also is survived by her sisters, Marie and Theresa, sister-in-law Gerry and family friend, Dan. There are numerous nieces, nephews and many close friends. The Funeral Service will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 1:00 pm with viewing prior to the service. Fr. John Okosun of St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church will officiate. Interment will follow at the Brandon Cemetery. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Irene to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, for Cancer Services, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB R7A 2B3.
