SLOOTWEG: Neeltje “Nell” (nee van Tol). It is with great sadness that the family of Nell Slootweg announce her passing on Monday, June 10, 2013 at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon, Manitoba, at the age of 81. Nell was born in Abbenes, Haarlemmermeer, The Netherlands on November 10, 1931, one of a set of twins. She grew up in Holland and on June 24, 1953 married Nick Slootweg. Shortly thereafter, they immigrated to Canada with just $45.00 and 2 suitcases and settled in Brandon, Manitoba. Within eleven years came 5 children – John, Nick, Ron, Jo-Anne and Arlene. Nell was a hard working homemaker and took great pride in keeping her house in good order with meals always on time. She loved having a big garden and lots of flowers. Life was not “all work and no play” as the Slootweg family recalls Nell’s Birthday parties on November 10th each year as a time for friends to gather and have fun. Nell made numerous trips back to Holland over the years and many car trips with the family around Canada and the US. Nell is survived by five children: son John (Suzan) of Athabasca, AB; granddaughter Melanie (Leif) Anderson, great-grandsons Tyler and Nathan of Calgary, AB; granddaughter Angela (Darrel) Bogdanek, great-grandchildren Bryce and Brooke of Sexsmith, AB; son Nick (Joan), grandson Nico of Whitecourt, AB; son Ron (Doreen) of Sexsmith, AB; daughter Jo-Anne, granddaughter Ashlee of Grande Prairie, AB; daughter Arlene (David) Leech, grandchildren Morgan and Ryan of Brandon, MB. Also surviving are 3 sisters (including her twin) and numerous nieces and nephews. Nell was predeceased by her husband Nick in January of 2010.The Funeral Service to celebrate Nell’s life took place on Monday, June 17, 2013 at Memories Chapel. Arlene Robertson officiated. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ron Slootweg, Jo-Anne Slootweg, David Leech, Morgan Leech, Ryan Leech and Nico Slootweg. Friends who so desire may make a donation in memory of Nell to a charity of their choice.
