McRAE: Peacefully, on November 8, 2004, with his loving wife Margaret at his side, Allan Donald McRae passed away. Allan's health had been declining for four years. Due to this, his last few weeks were spent at the Souris Personal Care Home. A.D. was born to Bill and Bertha McRae May 11, 1930. Allan's youth was spent helping out on the farm. The McRae's raised cattle and horses and enjoyed showing them at fairs. Allan loved cattle more. His school years were spent in a one-room schoolhouse in the South Brandon District. School took second place to work on the farm, so he quit school early to begin his occupation as a farmer. Allan's family were very modern and tried out all the new inventions. They were one of the first to have a self-propelled combine. Allan loved the land and grew many a great crop on his farm that was located next to his parent's farm. He married his wife, Margaret Reed, on November 27, 1956. Together they had three children and ran a successful grain and cattle farm. Allan started out with registered Black Angus cattle. He won many awards with them and became quite well known. He was always trying to improve the breed. Never one afraid of a challenge, he saw a new breed and decided to try them out. In 1979, Allan and his son Blair formed a partnership to go into Simmental Cattle. He was very successful with them as well. He retired from cattle in 1997, but never lost interest. He was very proud when he was rewarded with the A. O. Henuset Award for dedication to the Simmental Breed of cattle. Allan was a member of the Angus Association and the Simmental Association. He was involved with Manitoba Pool and the U C T. Allan was a family man. He was close to his brothers and sisters. He loved to get together with them. He was a real people person. He loved to meet and talk to all kinds of people. He especially loved to argue! He was happy to visit neighbors. Neighbors to him could be 20 miles away. Allan loved the fall for it was a time of harvest. He especially loved to raid people's gardens. No one's tomatoes were safe when he came to visit. He loved playing cards; was know to play for money sometimes. He enjoyed fairs, skating, fishing, boating, and camping. He loved Oak Lake so much that he bought a cabin there to enjoy his retirement summers. Allan was able to spend most of this past summer there and was very happy. He was very proud of his seven grandchildren and taught them a lot. He was in a lot of pain this past year and they really helped him through it. Allan is survived by his wife Margaret; sons Blair (Lois) and Jeff (Linda); daughter Janice (John) Bokkel; grandkids Brett and Melissa McRae, Marja, Jonathan and Tonja Bokkel, Tyson and Eric McRae; sisters Pearl Sheldon of Brandon and Bernice Anderson of Swan River; sister-in-law Marian (Joe) Kozak of Manitou; and numerous nieces and nephews. Allan was predeceased by his mother and father; brothers Howard and Gordon; nephews Malcolm and Glen McRae; brothers-in-law Jim Sheldon and Doug Anderson; sister-in-law Margaret McRae; and grandson Christopher Bokkel. According to Allan's wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life was held at Central United Church on November 12, 2004.
